About Albert Bichot

The first traces of the Bichot family date back to 1214. From 1350, the family was established in Burgundy, at its stronghold in Châteauneuf-en-Auxois. The family’s coat of arms has not changed since then, nor has its symbol, a doe (biche).

In 1831, Bernard Bichot founded a wine brokerage that bore his name in Monthélie. His son, Hippolyte, who followed in his father’s footsteps and purchased the first vines in Volnay, was already convinced that upstream management was essential. His son, Albert Bichot, the first to bear this name, expanded the family business in the late 19th century and moved the headquarters in 1912 to its permanent location in the center of Beaune.

Born in 1900, the second Albert Bichot was one of the pioneers of overseas export sales. North America, Asia, Oceania… he traveled the world, determined to have wine lovers taste wines that were already recognized as being among the finest. In the second half of the 20th century, his four sons, Bernard, Albert, Bénigne, and Jean-Marc became the heirs to this savoir-faire. A new era of expansion began with the construction of a large aging cellar, a new bottling center, and winery.

After having gone off to discover the world, (from the Arctic to Adélie Land), Albéric Bichot joined the company in the early 1990s and took over its management in 1996, representing the 6th generation to run the House. Albert Bichot’s expertise is based on respect for terroir and for nature. Using organic and sustainable viticultural practices, based on observation, prevention and attention to Nature’s equilibrium, Albert Bichot strives to preserve this fertile land for future generations.

Albert Bichot owns over 105 hectares (260 acres) divided among six estates that cover Burgundy from north to south. Each estate is located in a specific viticultural area; combined they comprise the mosaic that is Burgundy from Chablis to Beaujolais.

  • Domaine Long-Depaquit in Chablis (65 ha/160 acres): sustainable and organic viticulture
  • Domaine du Clos Frantin (9.5 ha/23.5 acres): organic viticulture (European Ecocert certification)
  • Château-Gris (3.5 ha/8.5 acres) in Nuits-Saint-Georges: organic viticulture (European Ecocert certification)
  • Domaine du Pavillon (16 ha/39.5 acres) in Pommard: organic viticulture (European Ecocert certification)
  • Domaine Adélie in Mercurey (7.5 ha/18.5 acres): organic viticulture (European Ecocert certification)
  • Domaine de Rochegrès in Moulin-à-Vent (5.2 ha/13 acres): sustainable viticulture

An Albert Bichot estate is primarily composed of the finest vineyards, called climats, within several appellations. Each estate is dedicated to wines coming from the area it belongs to, and boasts its own winery and cellars where a dedicated team vinifies and ages its precious crus.  The same care is given to the grapes that come from the winery’s own vineyards as to those that are purchased from their loyal partner growers.
