This is a family with their finger on the pulse of the region [...] they just happen to be making some of the best wines from Alto Adige as well.

About J. Hofstätter

Renowned worldwide for its Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer, Tenuta J. Hofstätter boasts over a century of winemaking history in its exceptional vineyards in Alto Adige, Italy’s northernmost region, also celebrated for its stunning Dolomite mountains. The winery is nestled in the charming village of Tramin, celebrated as the birthplace of Gewürztraminer. Today, Tenuta J. Hofstätter stands as one of Alto Adige’s largest family wine estates, now in its fifth generation. Situated on the eastern and western slopes of the southern Adige Valley, the estate’s distinct vineyards benefit from diverse soil compositions and optimal microclimates, with elevations ranging from 250 to 850 meters above sea level.

Preserving Alto Adige’s oldest Pinot Noir vineyards is a testament to the pioneering spirit of Ludwig Barth von Barthenau, who in the late 19th century introduced this noble grape variety to his mountain retreat, the Barthenau estate, which has been a part of the winery for nearly a century now. This enduring legacy of the winery’s Pinot Noir heritage continues to inspire the family to maintain the status as leaders of Pinot Noir in the Dolomite region.

The winery’s “Vigna” bottlings highlight wines from very unique vineyards. The “Vigna” classification was introduced by Paolo Foradori in 1987, marking the first time in Alto Adige that all wines from precisely defined parcels were identified as such.

Martin Foradori Hofstätter has been managing Tenuta J. Hofstätter since assuming leadership from his father Paolo in 1992. Together with his wife Beatrix he embarked on an era of modernization and expansion of the winery, including the acquisitions of Weingut Dr. Fischer in Germany’s Mosel wine region and Maso Michei, located at an impressive elevation of 2788 feet in the southern Trentino.

In 2023, their son Niklas continues his family legacy by joining the winery as its fifth generation. Combining his education, international experiences, and familial tradition, Niklas contributes to the ongoing excellence of the estate.
