About Pinea

Anyone who believes in the power of dreams will fall in love with Pinea winery. The project is a joint venture between childhood friends, Vicente Pliego and Hugo Del Pozzo, who shared an ambitious purpose: to produce the best wines in the world. To achieve their goal, they assembled 85 acres of mature vineyards (30 to 95+ year-old vines) in the Grand Cru region of the Ribera del Duero, Spain. There, at over 3,000+ ft. elevation, vines are planted in a mosaic of soils with abundant presence of limestone and subject to extreme weather, from snowy winters to very hot summer days, with 40-degree diurnal-nocturnal temperature shifts that give the Pinea fruit tremendous character.

The winery’s philosophy is that the wines are produced in the vineyard. Accordingly, Pinea employs organic and bio-dynamic viticulture practices, and a non-interventionist approach to vinification, to let the fruit be the star.

The winery’s name was inspired by a majestic pine tree of the Pinea varietal. For over 500 years, this majestic tree has witnessed winemaking history being made. And since 2014, it has witnessed the Pinea team’s passionate work that results in wines that capture the elusive combination that the best Ribera del Duero wines are known for: lifted, perfumy aromatics, complex flavors, elegant texture, and a long, lingering finish.

The 2018 vintage of the winery’s flagship, PINEA, was recognized by Wine Spectator in July 2023 as the 4th best wine from Spain. PINEA is produced with fruit from the estate’s oldest vines, and after hand harvesting, fermentation occurs in 500-liter French oak barriques and the wine is aged for 24 months. It has been described by wine experts as “the maximum expression of Tempranillo at its very best” and perhaps that is why Spain’s professional golfer, Sergio Garcia, chose to serve PINEA when he hosted all past champions of the Masters Tournament for his champion’s dinner.

The winery’s second label, “17” by Pinea, celebrates the year 2017, an important year in the life of the winery – and, coincidentally, the year that Mr. Garcia won the Masters golf tournament, and it was served at his wedding in July of 2017. “17” by Pinea is produced with 100% Tempranillo and a selection of the best grapes from different vineyards in the Pinea Estate. After primary fermentation in stainless steel vats, it ages for 20 months in mostly French oak barrels and a portion in American oak.

“KORDE” is the name of the winery’s Rosé, also produced with Tempranillo grapes from the Pinea Estate, and aged for 6 months in French oak barrels where it achieves a mélange of aromas with a refreshing expression of red barriers like strawberry, raspberry, boysenberry, and abundant floral scents. Its unique character routinely results in wine enthusiasts referring to Korde Rosé as: “the best Rosé I have ever tasted!”

Pinea also produces a white wine: KORDE Blanc. It is produced with Albillo Mayor grapes, indigenous to this part of Spain. Since its debut vintage in early 2022, KORDE Blanc has been capturing the palates of wine experts who, prior to tasting it, believed the fabulous characteristics it shows were reserved only for Grand Cru white wines from Burgundy.
