About Enrico Serafino

The story of the winery is the story of an act of strong will. Enrico Serafino, born and raised in a rich family from northern Piemonte not involved in wine, changed his life at the age of 23 to realize his dream of producing “luxury wines; white, red and sparkling wines in the best vineyards of the Piemonte Region”.

It was 1878 when he moved to Canale, close to Alba, in the wine region that in 2014 was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site: Langhe, Roero and Monferrato.

This gifted Piemontese area is suited to produce a wide array of different appellations among the greatest ones in Italy. Enrico Serafino chose to focus on producing complex wines rarely provided by the farmers with the aim to compete with the most well–respected labels in the world: Barolo, Barbaresco and Metodo Classico Sparkling. To do that he immediately built a fascinating underground cellar and concentrated his efforts in expanding the knowledge and refining the expertise to become an innovative trailblazer.

Several events demonstrated the success of that choice: international gold medals, exports all over the world (including back-then far-away China), wines served to Royal Families, and U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. 

Since then the winery has been making special bottles continuously for 145 years in the same original underground cellar, respecting tradition and taking care of those who helped make it happen. This, along with an incredible library of old vintages going back ~80 years, and a special artisanal expertise in making wines, shows its commitment to passing on tradition from generation to generation.

The winery’s vineyard holdings comprise 25 hectares of: Barolo and Barbaresco, Barbera d’Alba and Nebbiolo d’Alba and Alta Langa (Pinot Nero and Chardonnay).

In fact, Enrico Serafino started the production of Traditional Method in 1878, just thirteen years after the first Traditional Sparkling wine was born in Piemonte. Later, in early 1990s, a new project, aimed to create a territorial sparkling traditional wine, was born: the Alta Langa Appellation project. The winery was fascinated by this development and building on its experience of more than a century in the production of Traditional Method, decided to apply itself to this project and make it its priority confirming itself as a trailblazer.

Along with that, the production of Barolo and Barbaresco, and other indigenous grapes varieties, has carried on. Renowned Barolo expert Kerin O’Keefe recently did a retrospective tasting of dozens of Barolos and Barbarescos back to the 1940s and summarized the experience by noting “Tasting a selection of older vintages of Enrico Serafino’s Barolos and Barbarescos back to 1949 that the winery opened for me last October was downright awe-inspiring. A wonderful demonstration that showcased the grandeur of perfectly aged Nebbiolo, these were indestructible wines that stunned with energy, complexity, and personality.”

Enrico Serafino wines are constantly highly rated by the most renowned Italian and international wine critics (i.e. Alta Langa awarded as Best Bubbles of the Year by Gambero Rosso, 95+ Robert Parker, etc…).

Enrico Serafino is committed to all issues of social responsibility: from sustainable viticulture to biodiversity protection, from promoting social initiatives to respecting stakeholders. In 2019 the winery achieved VIVA certification that assesses the sustainability performances of all company activities.
