About Seppeltsfield
Seppeltsfield is one of Australia’s most historic wine estates, with more than 175 years of Barossa Valley heritage. Founded in 1851 by Joseph and Johanna Seppelt, just 15 years after the European settlement of South Australia, the estate helped shape the early identity of Australian wine and remains one of the country’s great national treasures.
What began as a 158-acre property in the Hundred of Nuriootpa slowly grew into one of Australia’s most important wine dynasties. Across generations, the Seppelt family built Seppeltsfield into an estate known for ambition, quality, and scale, producing wines and spirits that earned the property a reputation as one of the great “showplaces” of Australia.
Seppeltsfield is most famous for its extraordinary Centennial Collection, an unbroken lineage of single-vintage Tawny dating from 1878 to the present day. It remains the only winery in the world to release a 100-year-old, single-vintage wine every year, making the historic 1878 Centennial Cellar one of the most remarkable wine collections anywhere in the world.
The estate’s historic 1888 Gravity Cellar has also been recommissioned for Seppeltsfield’s modern still wine program. Built into the hillside, the cellar allows fruit and wine to move gently through production by gravity, supporting elegance, texture, and purity. Today, it plays an important role in the estate’s renewed focus on premium Barossa and Eden Valley wines, including Shiraz, Grenache, Touriga, Mataro, Eden Valley Riesling, and other expressive Australian varieties.
This new chapter honors Seppeltsfield’s fortified wine legacy while reimagining traditional Barossa varieties as luxury still wine expressions. The house style favors aromatic lift, medium weight, elegance, and ageability rather than sheer power alone. The Great Terraced Vineyard, one of the estate’s most dramatic and recognizable sites, reflects the scale of Seppeltsfield’s ambition and its deep connection to the Barossa landscape.
Today, Seppeltsfield is under the custodianship of proprietor Warren Randall, a viticulturist and winemaker who worked for the Seppelt family in the 1980s and views his role as carrying the estate’s legacy forward. The modern team also includes Fiona Donald and senior winemaker Charlie Seppelt, a fifth-generation member of the founding family, creating a bridge between the estate’s historic roots and its future.
Across its vineyards and wineries, Seppeltsfield is committed to sustainability through Freshcare and Sustainable Winegrowing Australia, with a focus on biodiversity, water conservation, waste reduction, and caring for the land for future generations.
The Seppeltsfield Estate Experience
Seppeltsfield is also one of Australia’s great wine destinations. Located near Adelaide, the estate brings together a cellar door, FINO Restaurant, a café, artisan studios, a distillery, concert venues, and immersive wine experiences that welcome wine lovers, travelers, food lovers, and culture seekers alike.
With the forthcoming six-star luxury hotel and spa, The Oscar at Seppeltsfield, the estate continues to build on its reputation as one of the Barossa’s defining hospitality destinations. The estate’s recognition by World’s 50 Best Vineyards and the South Australian Tourism Awards reflects what visitors discover on arrival: Seppeltsfield is not simply a winery, but one of Australia’s great wine, food, art, and cultural estates.
My ambition is to make Seppeltsfield the crown jewel of South Australia’s fine wine scene. We’re already halfway there, but there’s still plenty of work to do.
