About M. Chapoutier

The name Chapoutier occupies a storied place in the history of the Rhône Valley, beginning 1808, when the family first settled in the Rhône Valley. Throughout the 19th century and well into the next, M. CHAPOUTIER and its eponymous winery grew steadily, producing wine from esteemed vineyard sites such as Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie and Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

A true turning point came in 1990 with the arrival of Michel Chapoutier. Visionary and bold, Michel Chapoutier brought a dynamic new approach, driven by a quest to discover and reveal high-potential Terroirs and let the soils express themselves. Open to new horizons and other Terroirs, while staying rooted in Rhône Valley grapes, the company’s true DNA.

Under his leadership, Michel Chapoutier established bold initiatives. One of the most notable was the introduction of Single Vineyard Selections: wines that reflect the purest expression of a precise parcel. Each of these wines offers an “exact photography of a Terroir”. The union of soil, climate, and traditional know-how. The guiding principle: allow the soil to express itself, intervene as little as possible, and present the most authentic photography of the Terroir and the vintage.

In each instance, Michel’s decisions were, and continue to be, driven by a deep respect for the soil, climate, and his fellow human beings. He believes that only healthy vines growing within a balanced ecosystem can produce truly great wine. Since 1990, the winery has maintained an unwavering commitment to practicing biodynamic viticulture. All chemical pesticides and herbicides are prohibited. Instead, the vineyards are nourished with organic matter, thereby preserving biodiversity and beneficial microorganisms essential to healthy soils. Vineyard work, including pruning and harvesting, is timed according to the natural rhythms of the earth, sun and moon.

A profound respect for nature and its rhythms drives Michel to constantly learn, improve and explore new possibilities. These choices of philosophy and practices have been validated time and time again, as M. CHAPOUTIER is the most awarded winery in the world, with more 100-point scores from Robert Parker than any other.

In a further gesture of inclusivity and respect, Michel CHAPOUTIER decided to print all his wine labels in Braille.

With Mathilde and Maxime, a new generation joins Corinne and Michel Chapoutier to perpetuate the tradition of a family House. To continue to share this unique vision of the wine Universe, a philosophy rooted in the Terroirs.
