About Scopone
Scopone’s history dates back to the 19th century as a farmhouse that later served as a refuge during World War II. Its name is derived from the Erica scoparia (Scopi bushes) that flourish in the adjoining woods, evidence of the area’s rich biodiversity. The winemaking business began in 1996 when the Genazzani family, who acquired the property in 1992, was advised on its potential by the legendary Italian oenologist Giacomo Tachis. The first vintage was released in 1997. Since 2021, the estate has been managed with dedication by the Minari family, with Cristina Minari aiming to transform Scopone into a leading reference for excellence in Montalcino.
The estate’s vineyards extend over 12 hectares, situated at almost 500 meters above sea level in the southeast portion of the appellation, on the slope facing Mount Amiata. The soils are rich in rocky components like galestro and alberese. While the vineyards are primarily cultivated with Sangiovese, which is key to their flagship wines, there are also small portions of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. The winemaking approach at Scopone blends tradition with modern techniques. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and lasts about 7–10 days, followed by a maceration phase of approximately 15 days. The wines are then aged primarily in large French oak barrels, ranging from 25hl to 65hl, adhering to the traditional aging requirements for their classified wines.
Scopone is renowned for producing wines under the prestigious Montalcino appellations, including Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Rosso di Montalcino DOC, both made from 100% Sangiovese. The Brunello, often a focus of critical acclaim, is known for its intense color, aromas of red and black fruits, and a solid structure with juicy tannins. Beyond their pure Sangiovese expressions, Scopone also produces a Super Tuscan blend, the Rimani Toscana IGT. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Merlot, and Syrah, Rimani showcases the influence of Giacomo Tachis, who was instrumental in planting Cabernet Sauvignon on the property. These wines collectively serve as ambassadors for the viticultural tradition of the Montalcino region.
