About Fattoria Le Pupille

Few estates have done more to define the modern identity of Maremma than Fattoria Le Pupille.

Set in the southern reaches of coastal Tuscany, between the rolling hills of Grosseto and the influence of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Fattoria Le Pupille has become one of the great reference points for a region once far less renowned than Chianti Classico, Montalcino, or Bolgheri. The region’s rise is inseparable from Elisabetta Geppetti, who took charge of the estate in 1985 at just 20 years old and helped bring Morellino di Scansano and Maremma Toscana to international attention.

Known today as the “Lady of Morellino,” Elisabetta was among the first to recognize the potential of this land to produce exceptional wines: Mediterranean warmth, cooling coastal breezes, ancient soils, and pronounced day-night temperature shifts. From that foundation, she built an estate that could express both the authenticity of southern Tuscany and the ambition of a world-class winegrowing region.

Today, Fattoria Le Pupille remains a family story. Elisabetta works alongside her children, Clara and Ettore, who have helped carry the estate into its next chapter: strengthening its global reputation, expanding its hospitality experiences, and exploring new varieties and premium bottlings that show the full potential of coastal Tuscany. Wines like Le Pupille Syrah and Piemme, a distinctive and highly limited 100% Petit Manseng from the Pian di Fiora vineyard, are part of that evolution, showing that Le Pupille is still experimenting, still refining, and still expanding the possibilities of Maremma.

The estate farms 85 hectares of vineyards across a mosaic of sites in Maremma, including the celebrated Poggio Valente. The vineyards sit at varying altitudes and exposures near Pereta, Magliano in Toscana, and Istia d’Ombrone, with soils that include sandstone, iron-rich clay, tuff, and stone. The sea plays an essential role here, bringing freshness, lift, and balance to wines that might otherwise be defined only by the Tuscan sun.

Sangiovese remains central to the estate’s identity, especially through Morellino di Scansano and Poggio Valente. At the same time, Fattoria Le Pupille has shown how beautifully international varieties can speak through Maremma. Nowhere is that more clear than Saffredi, the estate’s benchmark Super Tuscan, first conceived in the late 1980s and now one of the great collectible wines of the Tuscan coast. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, Saffredi has earned numerous 100-point scores from top critics, and the 2019 vintage was named the No. 8 Wine of 2022 by Wine Spectator.

The strength of Le Pupille, though, is not limited to one flagship wine. Poggio Valente has become a powerful expression of Maremma Sangiovese. Poggio Argentato shows the estate’s skill with textured coastal white wine. Morellino di Scansano remains the heart of the estate’s regional identity. Across the range, the family has created wines that feel rooted in Maremma while continuing to push the region forward.

For visitors, the estate offers a complete view into this world, with a newly built tasting room, historic winery spaces, classic tastings, verticals of Poggio Valente, cigar and chocolate pairings, and light lunches in the vineyard. It is a place where the family’s story, the landscape, and the wines come together naturally.

Fattoria Le Pupille stands today as one of the clearest voices of Maremma: a family estate shaped by sea air, ancient soils, Tuscan sun, and the vision to see greatness in a region still writing its story.
